Charity Information

More Information

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is a noncompetitive walk (and a 5K run) that supports the American Cancer Society's mission to fight cancer through research, education, advocacy and patient services. As the nation's largest nongovernmental breast cancer research supporter, the American Cancer Society has invested over $388.4 million for breast cancer research since 1971, giving those touched by breast cancer more reasons for hope. October 2012 will be the second Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event in Charleston. We are very excited to offer this inspirational 5k Walk and Run to honor and celebrate breast cancer survivors, educate women about the importance of early detection and prevention and raise money to fund lifesaving research and support programs to further the progress against this disease. Through the generous contributions of event participants and sponsors, we will allow the American Cancer Society to continue to: • fund lifesaving breast cancer research; • provide up-to-date breast cancer information; • ensure all women have access to breast cancer screening and treatments, regardless of income; and, • provide services that improve the quality of life for breast cancer patients and their families. Since 1993, nearly 8 million walkers have raised more than $450 million to help fight breast cancer through the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer events. Locally held each October, Making Strides is a grassroots, community-based walk, with teams of walkers from hundreds of corporations, hospitals, schools, and municipal and community organizations. In 2012, the Society expects to increase the number of participants spreading the message of hope for those diagnosed with cancer and the importance of early detection of breast cancer.
